From Specialised Care to Community-Centered Support: Abu Dhabi Redefines Access to Mental Health Services

On August 3, 2026, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) announced an initiative to expand and redefine access to mental health services in the Emirate, shifting towards a more community-centered approach. This transformation includes an 81% increase in mental health professionals since 2022, with plans to double patient capacity in the next two years. Mental health services have been integrated into Primary Care Centers, where over 1,930 family physicians have been trained to diagnose and manage common mental health conditions. The Emirate now hosts 143 mental health facilities, including 13 specialized centers, supported by 640 qualified professionals. This strategic shift aims to provide proactive, continuous support, improve accessibility, and enhance the overall quality of life for individuals in Abu Dhabi.
